Death’s Door: Undefended at the Threshold
Dying into Life, Living into Death
“I’ve been so woven into the mesh
of my trivial errands, that only now
do I begin to hear the mystery
of dying everywhere.” ~ Rumi, “Dying”
All the wisdom teachings of the world tell us, through one story or another, that the key to life lies in the manner in which we meet death within and around us. This retreat will be an opportunity to welcome all that emerges as we turn towards our own death, the deaths of our loved ones, and the “everyday opportunities to die” that abound in a life fully lived.
Poetry is the only language that can speak to and through us of the great Mystery of death. Through poetry, the unspeakable can be spoken, the unendurable endured, and the miraculous shared. In addition, ritual, movement, writing, breathwork, silence and inquiry will hold, heal, challenge, and reveal us within an exquisitely supportive sacred space as we welcome the fears, losses, blessings and awakenings that come from opening to death — our own, our loved ones’ and the “everyday little dyings” that face us constantly if we have eyes to see.
“And so long as you have not experienced
this: to die and so to grow
you are only a troubled guest
on the dark earth.” ~ Goethe, “Holy Longing”
